The annual cultural exchange is run by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts with the City of Salzburg. It places one returning VCCA visual-artist Fellow in the Stadt:Atelier at the Künstlerhaus in Salzburg, Austria, from September 1–30, 2027.

The Fellow works independently in an equipped live-work studio in central Salzburg. German is helpful but not required, and VCCA notes that the experience can be somewhat solitary.

Benefits & funding

  • A €600 stipend is provided.
  • The Fellow receives a two-level, 70 m² combined studio and living space with a kitchenette, lounge, bathroom, linens, internet access, and a washing machine in the building.
  • VCCA suggests a daily payment of $105 for international residencies; applicants seeking to pay less than $95 per day must provide income documentation by October 1.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be visual artists who previously completed a residency at VCCA’s Mt. San Angelo location.
  • A Fellow who participated in a VCCA international residency during the previous three years is ineligible for the current cycle, except when that participation was at Moulin à Nef.
  • VCCA states no nationality, country-of-residence, degree, age, gender, or work-experience requirement for this exchange.
  • German language knowledge is helpful but not required.

Application process

    Choose Stadt Salzburg within VCCA’s international exchange program and begin a separate SlideRoom application for this location.

    Complete the application form and submit current work samples, a project description, and the $30 application fee.

    Submit between June 1 and September 15; a separate application and fee are required for every exchange program selected.

    VCCA notifies applicants by December 15; anyone selected for more than one exchange must choose one.
