EMMIR is a two-year, 120-ECTS Erasmus Mundus master’s in migration and intercultural relations, jointly run by a consortium of nine institutions across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Students begin together in Oldenburg, Germany, continue in Stavanger, Norway, and then follow an individual mobility path with coursework and a project-based internship.
The fourth semester centres on supervised research and a master’s thesis. Applications for Edition 14, covering 2027–2029, are not yet open and are expected to open in October 2026.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus+ scholarship recipients receive €1,400 per month for 24 months, with health insurance, university registration, and student-service fees covered.
- Scholarship recipients pay mobility-related travel, visa, vaccination, and residence-permit costs from the monthly stipend; there is no separate travel or installation payment.
- Non-fee-paying self-funded students pay no participation cost and receive the same insurance and fee coverage, but cover their living and travel costs.
- Fee-paying self-funded students pay €4,500 per semester plus living and travel costs; participation costs cover insurance, registration, and student-service fees.
Eligibility
- Hold a completed Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a field related to migration studies, with a final grade of at least C+ or equivalent.
- Document prior knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations, and empirical methods through relevant modules, papers, essays, or examinations.
- Applicants whose native language or undergraduate instruction was not English must document English proficiency; native English speakers must document a second language relevant to migration studies.
- A degree obtained more than five years ago must be explained in the statement of purpose, while applicants who already hold a master’s must justify pursuing another one.
- Previous Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship recipients may apply for admission but cannot receive another such scholarship.
- The published requirements state no hard nationality, residency, gender, age, or work-experience minimum.
