EMCL-25 is a 24-month, 120 ECTS full-time research master’s in clinical linguistics, neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics. It is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree that has been running for over 20 years, coordinated by the University of Groningen with the University of Eastern Finland and Ghent University.

From the 2025-2027 cohort onward, the first semester is spent at the University of Eastern Finland, the second at Ghent and the third at Groningen. A mandatory internship runs across the second and third terms, and the fourth term is a 30 ECTS thesis. Graduates receive a joint Master of Science degree recognised by all three universities.

Each cohort takes circa twenty students from all over the world, and the consortium works with 23 associated research and industry partners. The programme reports that 70% of its graduates continue to a PhD, with rising numbers moving into R&D, neurotechnology and clinical work.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship: a full tuition waiver plus a monthly allowance of €1,400 covering travel, visa, installation, insurance and subsistence, for up to two years.
  • Scholarship places are limited and reserved for the most outstanding applicants; several are specifically allocated to students from selected countries.
  • Awards follow the ranking of students produced during the application and selection procedure.
  • Without a scholarship, the consortium fee for the whole programme is €9,000 for Programme Country students (EU or EEA passport) and €18,000 for Partner Country students (no EU or EEA passport), as published for the 2025-2027 cohort.
  • The consortium fee covers registration, administration, diploma costs, insurance, excursions, lab costs, and attendance with accommodation at one Science of Aphasia conference.
  • The fee excludes literature, accommodation, travel and other study-related expenses.
  • A limited number of students can be admitted as self-payers.
  • A scholarship holder cannot hold another Erasmus+ or EU grant at the same time, and anyone who already held an Erasmus+, EMJM or Erasmus Mundus Master or Doctoral scholarship is not eligible.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of any nationality; passport status decides the fee tier, not admission.
  • No residency requirement is stated.
  • At least three years of higher education (BA, BSc or equivalent) with an emphasis in speech-language pathology, linguistics, biomedical sciences, psychology or special education.
  • Applicants from a linguistics degree must upload a transcript showing at least 60 ECTS in general linguistics courses.
  • Students still finishing a degree may apply with a transcript of records plus a university statement that the studies will be completed before 1 September 2027.
  • English proficiency, with results no older than two years: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall and 6.0 in each sub-score; TOEFL iBT 100 overall with sub-scores of 21; Pearson Academic 71 overall and 62 per section; LanguageCert Academic 75 overall and 65 per section; or a Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency certificate.
  • Native speakers from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the USA are exempt from the English test.
  • No age limit and no work-experience requirement are published.

Application process

    Wait for the application portal to open on 1 October 2026; it accepts applications for the 2027-2029 intake only until 1 December 2026.

    Fill in the application form, a DOC template downloaded from the admission page.

    Upload the whole package at once: motivation letter of one to two pages, official transcripts and degree certificate, Europass CV with photograph, passport or ID copy, English test result, and the general-linguistics ECTS transcript where it applies.

    Supply the names and email addresses of two referees; they are contacted only after the consortium has confirmed the package is complete and the candidate eligible.

    Candidates are ranked during selection, EMJM scholarships follow that ranking, and results are communicated from mid-February 2027.
