Benefits & funding

• Joint master’s degree from the partner universities: 120 ECTS across four semesters plus a summer school, 24 months in total.
• Every admitted student is exempt from the government-regulated tuition fees that apply to other studies in Norway.
• Half of those admitted are offered an EMJM scholarship of EUR 1,400 per month for 24 months; the other half are offered self-financing places.
• The scholarship is intended to help with travel, visa and living expenses, and the consortium states it may not cover them in full.
• Payments are made to a EUR account and begin only after arrival in Norway, so costs incurred before arrival fall on the student.
• Mobility through at least three countries is built into the degree, and the fieldwork in semesters 2 and 4 can be placed anywhere in the world.

Eligibility

• A bachelor’s degree of at least 180 ECTS in education, arts and humanities, political sciences, psychology, sociology, journalism, therapy or social work, following the ISCED 2013 field classification.
• A grade average of at least C (Good).
• Proof of English proficiency to HVL standards, waived for applicants who completed at least one year of university study taught in English in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia, or who hold a Nordic degree taught in English.
• Open to applicants from any country. A quota caps any single nationality at 10% of all scholarships awarded over the project’s six years, but it does not limit who may apply.
• Full-time enrolment for 24 months; there is no distance-learning route.
• Anyone who has already received an EMJM scholarship cannot receive a second one, but may apply for a self-financing place.

Application process

   Gather the documents: secondary school diploma, degree certificate with grading scale, official transcript, English proficiency documentation and passport or photo ID.

   Write the CV and motivational statement on the programme’s own templates and sign the acknowledgements form.

   Have any document not in English or a Scandinavian language translated by a certified translator.

   Apply through HVL’s Søknadsweb portal between 1 October and the deadline of 1 December 2026 at 23:59 CET.

   Written applications are scored out of 20 points; files reaching 15 points advance.

   Shortlisted candidates are invited in early March and interviewed during the first half of March.

   Results are sent in late March or early April, and the place must be confirmed within one week.

   Applicants from outside the EU and EFTA then apply for a Norwegian study permit, documenting NOK 166,859 for one year.
