ARCHMAT is a 120-ECTS joint master applying scientific methods to archaeological materials and conservation. The consortium is led by Universidade de Évora with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Sapienza Università di Roma.
Students follow compulsory mobility through Portugal, Greece and Italy during the first three semesters, then complete a thesis in the fourth. Graduates receive a joint ARCHMAT degree.
Benefits & funding
- A limited number of EU-funded Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded to admitted applicants according to the ARCHMAT ranking.
- Scholarship holders have participation costs covered and receive €1,400 per month for 24 months, totalling €33,600, toward travel, visa, installation and living costs.
- The program provides health insurance for the full two years.
- Applicants admitted without a scholarship may take a self-funded place if they can prove financial sustainability; the 2026–2028 partner notice listed tuition of €10,000.
Eligibility
- Applicants may be European or non-European and must hold a 180-ECTS first-cycle degree in an eligible science or humanities field, including physics, earth sciences, chemistry, biology-biochemistry, engineering, archaeology, conservation science, cultural heritage studies, architecture or art history.
- Final-year bachelor’s students may apply but must obtain the degree before the master begins.
- English evidence must be supplied through TOEFL iBT 87, IELTS 6 overall, a Cambridge certificate or proof of at least one year of university instruction in English, subject to the program’s published citizenship-based test exemption.
- Scholarship applicants must not have previously received an EMJM scholarship and cannot receive another EU grant while enrolled; scholarships require full-time study.
