Choreomundus studies dance and other movement systems — ritual practice, martial arts, games, sports and physical theatre — as intangible cultural heritage, drawing on ethnochoreology, anthropology, cultural studies and heritage studies. Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas coordinates a four-university consortium with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Clermont Auvergne and the University of Roehampton in London.

Students change country every semester and collect 120 ECTS, 30 per semester. Semester 1 runs in Kaunas, semester 2 in Athens, semester 3 in Clermont-Ferrand, and semester 4 at Roehampton or back at VMU, with the option to spend that final semester outside the EU. All four partners award the degree jointly.

Since 2012 the programme has trained 263 students from 80 countries across 13 cohorts. It is co-funded by the EU through Erasmus+, and the current consortium cycle runs to 2031. Graduates are pointed toward heritage safeguarding organisations, research, and socially inclusive arts projects.

Benefits & funding

  • 15 Erasmus Mundus scholarship places for the 2026-2027 intake, each paying €1,400 a month for the full 24-month study period.
  • 15 further applicants receive a tuition fee waiver covering the whole two-year programme, valued at €18,000.
  • A joint master’s degree awarded by all four partner universities, worth 120 ECTS.
  • Applicants without either award are directed to Erasmus+ student exchange grants, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional grants and country-specific scholarship schemes listed on the funding page.
  • Funding volume moves cycle to cycle: the 2024 intake ran with no full scholarships and a 50 percent fee waiver for self-funded students.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree of 180 ECTS or equivalent in the humanities or social sciences — dance studies, anthropology and related fields are the usual route — together with some dance experience.
  • A master’s degree of 120 ECTS in a similar discipline, held alongside dance knowledge, also qualifies.
  • A strong dance background with a degree in another field, such as health or engineering, can be considered when paired with relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum 60% CGPA, equivalent to a C in the Bologna grading system.
  • English at B2 for applicants who are neither native speakers nor educated in English: IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL iBT 87–109, Cambridge FCE 161–180, PTE Academic 59 and Duolingo 100–125 are among the accepted certificates, normally valid for two years.
  • Students taking the fourth semester at the University of Roehampton must reach IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in every component.
  • Open to applicants of any nationality. The programme states no age, residency or work-experience requirement.

Application process

    Read the programme content and the admission requirements to confirm the fit.

    Assemble the portfolio: two recommendation letters, a CV, a video of no more than three minutes demonstrating your own practice, and an essay of no more than two pages analysing that video.
