The University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship supports international students commencing or already enrolled in a higher degree by research at the University of Sydney. It is available for research master’s and doctoral study and is awarded competitively on academic merit, research experience, the research environment and supervisory arrangements.
Recipients are expected to study in Sydney, although the terms permit approved research overseas for part of the award. Two scholarship rounds serve different 2027 research-period groups.
Benefits & funding
- AUD 42,754 per year at the 2026 rate, indexed annually on 1 January.
- Automatic award of the University of Sydney Tuition Fee Scholarship, covering 100% of tuition fees for up to 14 research periods.
- Scholarship tenure of up to 14 research periods for a research doctorate or 7 research periods for a research master’s, less any study already completed toward the degree.
- Eligible relocation reimbursement of up to AUD 1,485 for travel to Sydney and up to AUD 1,485 for return travel after successful completion.
- Eligible thesis-cost reimbursement of up to AUD 420 for research master’s candidates or AUD 840 for doctoral candidates.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be international students when the scholarship is awarded. No nationality-specific list is stated.
- Applicants must apply for admission, or already be enrolled, in a University of Sydney postgraduate research degree: a research master’s or research doctorate.
- Admission normally requires strong academic results and prior research experience. Typical entry routes include a bachelor’s degree with honours or a relevant research master’s, subject to the selected course’s requirements.
- Full-time enrolment is expected. Part-time awards require special circumstances and, for international students, permission under their visa.
- Selection is competitive and considers academic merit, research experience, the quality of the research environment and supervisory support.

Application process
