The Roger Casement Fellowship in Human Rights is a strand of the Ireland Fellows Programme, funded by the Government of Ireland through Irish Aid. It brings early- to mid-career Nigerian professionals to Ireland for a one-year, taught master’s in human rights, law, governance and related fields. Fellows choose three eligible programmes from the Casement Fellowship Directory of Eligible Programmes and are placed at an Irish higher education institution.
The aim is to build a network of skilled, connected leaders who contribute to human-rights protection and good governance on returning home. The award covers the 2027/2028 academic year.
Benefits & funding
- Full payment of academic tuition fees
- Monthly living stipend of €700 (subject to review)
- Accommodation arranged and paid during Trimesters 1 and 2; a monthly accommodation allowance of €800–€1,000 in Trimester 3 (varies by location)
- Return economy airfare to and from Ireland
- Visa application fee, Irish residence permit fee, and medical and travel insurance
- Settling-in support and a departure allowance; access to a global alumni network
- No financial support or visa assistance for spouses or dependents
Eligibility
- Resident national of Nigeria
- A minimum of three years’ substantial work experience directly relevant to the proposed programme of study
- A bachelor’s-level qualification (minimum GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale — first class or second class honours Grade 1; second class Grade 2 may be accepted with substantial relevant experience), awarded in 2015 or later
- Must not already hold, or be studying toward, a master’s degree or higher
- Must have selected three programmes from the Casement Fellowship Directory of Eligible Programmes
- Must meet the English-language standard required by Irish higher education institutions
- Must not have applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme more than once before, and be able to take up the fellowship in 2027/2028
