The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma organized this three-day institute in Paris as part of its Childhood Forced Migration Journalism Project. It brought Europe-based reporters and editors together with researchers, clinicians, child-development experts, and practitioners.
Sessions addressed science-informed and ethical reporting on children and families affected by forced migration and displacement. The program combined briefings, panels, workshops, professional networking, source development, and peer learning.
Benefits & funding
- The program covered round-trip travel to Paris, airport transfers in Paris, meals during the institute, and up to three hotel nights for participants based outside Paris.
- Health insurance, travel insurance, visa fees, and ground transportation in participants’ home countries were not covered.
- Selected participants could receive a formal acceptance letter for a visa application, but the program did not provide visa assistance or pay visa fees.
Eligibility
- Applicants had to be reporters or editors based and residing in Europe, working in print, digital, audio, photography, television, or video.
- At least three years of professional journalism experience and high proficiency in English were required.
- Editor-reporter pairs were eligible.
- Past participants in the Dart Center’s Early Childhood Journalism Initiative, Columbia Journalism School employees, and student journalists were not eligible.
- The official page stated no nationality, degree, age, or gender restriction beyond the Europe residency and professional requirements.
