The Short Time Travel Grants are funded by the Nikolaus und Bertha Burckhardt-Bürgin Foundation and run by the University of Basel’s Career Advancement Office.
They let doctoral students and postdocs from any faculty make a short stay at a research institution abroad: a research visit, fieldwork, archive, collection or lab work, or a research-focused summer or winter school. A stay in Switzerland is possible only in justified exceptional cases.
Benefits & funding
- Up to CHF 5,000 per application: actual travel costs, a flat rate for accommodation and meals, and actual fees; no salary.
- Stays of 4 to 20 weeks.
- Paid into your account before the stay; matching funds are allowed but must be declared.
- Travel and health insurance are your own responsibility; a short final report is due within 4 weeks of your return.
Eligibility
- Enrolled doctoral students and postdocs at the University of Basel (any faculty) or one of its associated institutes.
- No nationality or residence rule is stated.
- The stay must be at a research institution abroad; Switzerland only in justified exceptional cases.
- Conference and congress trips are not funded.
