The Department of Chemistry at the University of Zurich pays mobility scholarships out of its Fonds Chemie und Pharmazie to its own Bachelor’s and Master’s students who spend part of their studies abroad.
The money follows the student rather than a fixed partner list. Any host university, any destination country and any supported form of stay can be funded, including exchange semesters, self-organized semesters and research internships.
There is no separate application. The department considers every eligible student who registers a stay abroad in the UZH Mobility Online system, then sets the amount once other funding is known.
Benefits & funding
- CHF 2,500 per semester for an exchange semester at a UZH partner university.
- CHF 4,000 per semester for a self-organized semester abroad.
- CHF 1,500 per month for a research internship abroad.
- The award is a contribution toward the stay, not full funding; the amount is reduced when other scholarships or internship pay are received.
- Students with limited financial means can instead apply for the UZH-wide Exchange made simple(r) scholarship, which the department describes as usually equal or higher; the two cannot be combined.
Eligibility
- Open to students enrolled at the University of Zurich with a major in Chemistry, Business Chemistry or Biochemistry.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s level students both qualify.
- At least 100 ECTS must already be earned in compulsory and elective modules of that major at UZH.
- The stay abroad may be at any university, in any country, and of any supported type.
- No nationality, residency, age or gender condition is published.

Application process
- 1Check that you already hold 100 ECTS in compulsory and elective modules of your chemistry major at UZH.
- 2Choose the route: an exchange place at a partner university, a self-organized semester abroad, or a research internship.
- 3Register the stay in UZH Mobility Online; self-organized stays are registered there too, and this registration is what puts you forward for the scholarship.
- 4Declare every other scholarship or internship payment you receive, because the department reduces its contribution accordingly.
- 5Take questions on the criteria to the chemistry study advisor, and questions on the exchange application itself to Global Student Experience.
