RISE Worldwide (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) is a DAAD programme, funded by the German federal research ministry, that places undergraduates from German universities in research groups abroad over the summer.

Interns assist a host’s research project, usually working in English. Hosts post projects in the RISE Worldwide database; students apply to up to three, and DAAD makes the final selection from the hosts’ rankings.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly scholarship and a travel allowance, both set by destination country; DAAD’s scholarship notes put student rates at €950–1,300 a month for most host countries
  • Health, accident and liability insurance
  • At least six weeks; DAAD funds at most three months
  • The English page says the scholarship helps cover part of living and travel costs

Eligibility

  • Fully enrolled at a German university or university of applied sciences from the 2nd subject semester, and still enrolled until the internship ends
  • Bachelor, Diplom or Staatsexamen students; Master’s students and graduates cannot apply
  • Any nationality, if enrolled in a degree programme at a German university and seeking the degree there
  • Biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, applied mathematics, applied computer science or related fields
  • English at B2, shown with the DAAD language certificate or a test such as TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge (the Abitur certificate does not count)
