MATHS-DISC is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Data Science for Industrial and Societal Challenges. The consortium is Università degli Studi di Verona, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Université Grenoble Alpes, Universidade de Lisboa and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The degree runs four semesters and 120 ECTS. Semester 1 builds the foundations — differential equations, functional analysis, probability and statistics, numerical analysis, modelling, programming and simulation — and can be taken at any of the five universities. Semester 2 is methods: computing and simulation at Wuppertal, or modelling and optimisation at Verona, with data science and AI on both paths.

Semesters 3 and 4 are spent at one university, first on specialisation electives, then on a master thesis addressing an industrial or societal problem of the digital and green transition. Eight pathways are offered: complex systems optimisation, high-performance computing and fluid dynamics, scientific machine learning, computational finance, health and biomedicine, logistics and transport, agrifood and environment, and energy markets. A graduate receives the master degree of each university where at least 30 ECTS were earned (60 for Lisbon and Kyiv), plus a MATHS-DISC certificate.

  • Scholarship holders pay no fees and are covered by comprehensive insurance for the full two years.
  • EMJM awards go to the highest-ranked candidates overall; NDICI awards to the strongest candidates from the targeted regions.
  • Each consortium university adds its own regional scholarships, accommodation grants and mobility funding, and Erasmus+ exchange grants are open to enrolled students.
  • Host organisations fund the semester-4 internship and short industry placements.
  • Student services at each university cover reception, mentoring, accommodation, language courses, visa and residence-permit support, plus tutoring and psychological support for students with special needs.
  • No fee figure is published for students admitted without a scholarship.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of any nationality; no residency requirement.
  • A first university degree of at least 180 ECTS after at least three years of study, at BSc level in mathematics or applied mathematics, or in a related field with a strong mathematical background — physics, engineering, computer science, economics or statistics.
  • The bachelor must be completed before 31 July for non-EU students and before 30 September for EU students, so final-year students can apply.
  • A CGPA above 75% is mandatory.
  • English proof: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 / ITP 550 / CBT 220, TOEIC 800, Cambridge B2 First 173 or C1 Advanced 160, with results no older than three years.
  • Applicants who studied in English may replace the test with official confirmation from their university.
  • No age limit and no work-experience requirement are set.

Application process

    Apply on the unicandidate.com platform in one of two rounds: December to February, which covers EMJM, NDICI, consortium-funded and self-funded places, or May to June.

    Upload everything in English as PDFs: national ID or passport, official transcripts with certified translation, CGPA, English proof, a Europass CV and a motivation letter.

    State which scholarship type you are applying for.

    The written application is scored out of 100; from 70 upwards the candidate is interviewed.
  5. 5
    The interview covers the mathematics background chosen at application stage and motivation, and is scored out of 30.

    Candidates reaching 90 points in total are admitted — to the main list, which is eligible for the EMJM and NDICI scholarships, or to the reserve list, admitted as self-funded students.

    Selection runs in March and April for the first round, and in July for the second.
