Master MITRA is a bilingual master’s degree in the social sciences and humanities devoted to transnational migration and its effects on contemporary societies. The Université de Lille coordinates it, and eleven universities across Europe, Africa and South America make up the consortium.
Students move between three or four partner countries over four semesters and 120 ECTS. The first year runs either on a French-language track starting in Lille or an English-language track starting at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, followed by a second semester in Poland, Romania or Hungary.
The second year splits into a professional specialisation built around an internship and a research specialisation built around fieldwork and a thesis. Graduates receive the Lille degree plus degrees from the partner universities they studied at — three to four diplomas in total.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus scholarships pay €1,400 per month for 24 months and cover travel, visa, installation and living costs; the number awarded per cycle is limited and the programme does not publish it.
- No student pays registration fees at partner universities: scholarship holders are exempt, and the programme covers those fees for students without an Erasmus Mundus grant.
- The compulsory student life contribution (CVEC) at Lille was €105 for 2025/2026; Erasmus Mundus holders are exempt and reimbursed, and other students may also claim exoneration and reimbursement.
- Enrolled students can apply for Université de Lille mobility funding: Erasmus grants for 2–12 months, income-based Mermoz regional grants for 3–6 months, AMI international mobility grants of €400 per month for 2–9 months for Crous grant holders, Mobilex awards, and €400 towards a summer or winter school.
- English-track students may apply for Université Libre de Bruxelles scholarships, and francophone applicants may apply for Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie master’s scholarships.
Eligibility
- Applicants hold a bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) in the social sciences or humanities — sociology, psychology, communication, political science, history, law or languages. Other backgrounds are considered when backed by professional experience.
- Final-year bachelor students may apply if they graduate before September; applicants who already hold a master’s degree may also apply.
- Certificates proving CEFR B2 in both French and English are compulsory, and a file missing either one is not reviewed. A bachelor’s degree taught entirely in one of the two languages counts as proof for that language.
- All nationalities may apply. Eligibility for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship itself follows the Erasmus+ country rules.
- Students must study at three or four full consortium universities in three or four different countries.

Application process
- 1Assemble the file: proof of residence (a utility bill or housing attestation, never an identity document), bachelor’s diploma and latest transcripts, a work or study certificate, an outline of the research or internship project, French and English language certificates, a European-format CV, a motivation letter, a personal video presentation, passport or ID and a photo.
- 2Submit everything through the MITRA application platform between 16 October 2026 and midnight on 17 January 2027; incomplete files are not reviewed.
- 3Pairs of evaluators check administrative validity and score the written file, then pre-selected candidates sit an oral interview in February 2027.
- 4Admission decisions follow in March 2027 and results are published in April 2027, with a waiting list.
- 5Admitted students complete administrative enrolment on arrival in Lille with an identity photo, ID (plus visa for non-European students) and original diplomas.
