MaMaSELF is a 120-ECTS master’s programme in materials science, physics and chemistry coordinated by the University of Rennes through a six-university consortium. Students study in at least two consortium universities across France, Germany, Italy or Poland and complete a master’s thesis that may be based at a university, partner institution or large-scale research facility.
The programme is taught in English over four semesters and combines coursework, a two-week summer school, mobility and a thesis of at least five months. The published deadlines for the 2026–2028 cohort have passed.
Benefits & funding
- Competitive Erasmus Mundus scholarships provide €33,600 over two years and cover travel, installation, living costs and tuition.
- Scholarship holders do not pay MaMaSELF tuition fees.
- Self-funded tuition is €6,000 per year for non-EU students and €3,000 per year for EU students; the programme lists a €4,500 rate for students who spent one year in Europe before the 1 September start.
- Tuition includes language courses, induction-week activities, the summer school, the status meeting package and worldwide insurance.
Eligibility
- Applicants worldwide may apply.
- Applicants need a 180-ECTS bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field such as geoscience, nanoscience or materials engineering; final-year bachelor’s students may apply with proof of third-year registration and must provide the diploma before enrolment.
- Mechanical engineering and mechatronics degrees are not considered suitable; civil engineering, medicine or pharmacy applicants need bachelor-level chemistry or physics preparation and must submit a course syllabus.
- Proof of English is compulsory: accepted routes include IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 for Rennes, Montpellier, Turin and AMU or 88 for LMU and TUM, specified Cambridge certificates, or qualifying English-medium study evidence.
- The programme requires mobility at two universities and a country change between the first and second years.
