The Killam Fellowships Program is a Canada–US undergraduate exchange run by Fulbright Canada (the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America).

Undergraduates at a university in one country spend one semester or a full academic year at a university in the other. They go either as direct exchange students between partner universities (paying home fees) or as self-placed visiting students (paying host tuition).

Benefits & funding

  • US$6,000 per semester, or US$12,000 for a full academic year, plus a health benefit plan.
  • A fall orientation in Ottawa and a spring seminar in Washington, D.C.
  • Fellows may apply for a mobility (in-country travel) grant: up to US$800 (Canadians’ page) or C$800 (Americans’ award provisions).
  • The award depends on available funding, acceptance by the host university and obtaining the right visa.

Eligibility

  • Citizens of Canada or the United States.
  • Full-time undergraduates in good standing at a degree-granting institution in their own country (fully accredited, for US applicants): Canadians go to the US, Americans to Canada.
  • Expect to graduate in spring 2028 or later.
  • Fluent in English (and/or French, where appropriate), with a superior and competitive academic record.
  • Meet your home university’s own requirements; direct exchange applicants must be nominated by their home university.

Application process

  1. 1
Pick a route: direct exchange (registered at a participating university, heading to a partner in the other country; each university nominates up to three full-year or six one-semester candidates by its own internal deadline) or the open competition (any degree-granting institution; deadline January 31, 2027).
  2. 2
Submit the single online application with CV, transcripts and a one-page personal statement.
