Can you apply?

Check who can apply

“I currently live in Germany. Can I still apply? … If you are a researcher - whether Humboldtian or an Early Career Researcher - you unfortunately cannot apply. However, people from Civil Society, Journalism or the Arts can apply regardless of their place of residence.” Eligibility

Circlebreaker is a free database of global fellowships, scholarships and programs — every one decoded like this.

We only check the criteria we have data for. Always confirm full eligibility on the official page before applying.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation runs this residency every year on a new theme; for 2027 it is “Oceanic Horizons: Navigating the Future of Our Blue Planet”.

Twelve people — Humboldt alumni, early career researchers and civil society practitioners — spend six weeks in Brandenburg and Berlin, with trips to the North and Baltic Sea coasts. They work together daily and create formats such as debates, workshops or media pieces for audiences beyond academia.

Benefits & funding

  • Fully funded; no participation fee.
  • Monthly allowance for the six weeks: researchers at usual Humboldt fellowship rates, practitioners an honorarium (amount not published).
  • Travel allowance to and from Germany, which also covers visa costs.
  • Free accommodation at Schloss Wiepersdorf (2 weeks) and a Berlin aparthotel (4 weeks), plus a budget for public events or outputs.
  • Family accommodation on request; no travel grant or allowance for family members.

Eligibility

  • Three groups: 5 Humboldt alumni, 3 early career researchers, 4 civil society practitioners; all need a clear link to the theme.
  • Alumni: hold an academic position, are not based in Germany, and receive no other Humboldt funding in August 2027.
  • Early career researchers: PhD candidates, or PhD completed less than four years before August 2027 (career breaks may be credited); academic position; not based in Germany.
  • Practitioners (creatives, journalists, NGO staff, entrepreneurs, consultants): no academic position; may live anywhere, Germany included.
  • No nationality bar: long-term residence, not citizenship, decides.
  • Fluent English and full in-person attendance from 2 August to 10 September 2027 are required.
