IMFSE is a two-year, 120-ECTS joint master’s programme in the Erasmus+ framework. Students rotate among Ghent University, the University of Edinburgh, Lund University and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya for the taught semesters.
The fourth semester is devoted to a master’s thesis, which may be hosted by a full or associated partner institution. The programme prepares graduates for fire safety engineering work across the built environment and related settings.
Benefits & funding
- Self-sponsored tuition is €8,000 per year for EEA students and €12,000 per year for other students; it covers enrolment at all partner universities and an insurance scheme.
- Accommodation, living, travel and additional insurance costs are not included in self-sponsored tuition.
- Contributor-funded awards range from tuition reductions to full tuition waivers and awards equivalent to an Erasmus+ full scholarship.
- If EMJM funding is renewed, those awards provide up to €1,400 per month plus a tuition waiver; as of September 2026, continued EMJM funding was not yet confirmed, although IMFSE stated that some scholarships would still be issued.
Eligibility
- Applicants need a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or a recognised equivalent of at least three years or 180 ECTS, in an eligible engineering, science, architecture, urbanism or related discipline.
- Final-year Bachelor’s students may apply, but must obtain the degree before the programme starts.
- Applicants must meet the published English-language requirements; exemptions require approval by the IMFSE Selection Committee.
- There is no nationality restriction.
