EMship is a two-year, 120-ECTS master in the design of sustainable ships and offshore structures, taught in English by a consortium of seven European universities as an Erasmus Mundus joint master.

Year one is in Ghent (Belgium) or Galați (Romania); year two in Rostock, Nantes, Lisbon, Liège or Madrid, each with its own specialisation. The thesis can involve an industrial or associated partner. The board assigns places; preferences are not guaranteed.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus+ scholarship: tuition waived plus EUR 1,400 a month for 24 months, for travel, visa, housing and living costs.
  • 95 scholarships over four cohorts (about 19 a year): 60 open to all nationalities, 35 for targeted regions.
  • Self-funded tuition: €9,000 a year (partner countries) or €4,500 (programme countries); up to 20 self-funded students a year may get up to 50% off.
  • Tuition excludes housing, living and travel costs.

Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent (3+ years or 180 ECTS) in mechanical or electromechanical engineering, naval architecture, marine technology or a related field; final-year students may apply if they graduate before the start.
  • Not eligible: STCW marine engineers, engine-room-focused Chief/Marine Engineer degrees, and the Belgian Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology.
  • English certificate, e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 (6.0 per section) or TOEFL iBT 92 (20 per section); exemptions are reviewed only after applying.
  • Any nationality; no residence requirement.
  • Past Erasmus+ EMJM scholarship holders cannot receive another.
  • Self-funded students from outside the EU must prove funds (Belgian minimum €12,794 for year one).

Application process

    Apply online through Ghent University’s OASIS portal, ticking the scholarship option; scholarship deadline 31 January 2027.

    Self-funded only: by 1 April if you need a visa, by 1 June if not.

    Two reference letters go to references@emship.eu before the deadline.

    Shortlisted applicants have an online interview with a 5-minute scientific presentation (scholarship applicants in March).

    A scan of the degree suffices to apply; a legalised copy is required once selected.
