i-MESC is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion, co-funded by the European Commission over the 2023–2029 period. It is coordinated by Université de Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens and run with partner universities in Poland, France, Spain, Slovenia, the United States and Australia.
Every student spends the first semester in Warsaw and the second in Toulouse, then chooses Bilbao, Ljubljana or Amiens for the third. The fourth semester is a six-month master thesis in a research laboratory or a company, in Europe, the USA or Australia.
Teaching centres on batteries and extends to supercapacitors and fuel cells, covering materials synthesis, device manufacturing, advanced characterisation, artificial intelligence and digital twins. The degree carries 120 ECTS over four semesters.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus (EMJM) scholarship: 1,400 EUR per month, up to 33,600 EUR across the 24 months, covering travel, visa, installation and living costs.
- EMJM scholarship holders also receive a full waiver of the participation fee.
- Industrial scholarship: a fixed 20,000 EUR per student, covering the same categories of cost.
- Volume announced for the 2023–2029 grant: up to 80 EMJM scholarships and at least 40 industrial scholarships across the four intakes from 2024–2026 to 2027–2029.
- Students without either scholarship receive a flat-rate 2,300 EUR contribution to mobility and visa costs for the whole 24 months.
- Participation fee for students without a scholarship: 4,000 EUR per year, which covers tuition, health insurance, accommodation during the integration week, language courses and graduation activities.
- The consortium states it tries to fund every selected student but does not guarantee it; self-financing is the alternative.
- An EMJM scholarship cannot be combined with an additional Erasmus+ mobility grant.
Eligibility
- A Bachelor degree or equivalent of at least 180 ECTS.
- Students in their final Bachelor year may apply with an enrolment certificate and must prove graduation by 1 June if selected.
- Expected backgrounds: chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, materials science, material process engineering, or modelling applied to electrochemistry; other strong profiles are considered when they fit the curriculum.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 87, IELTS 6.5 or Cambridge B2. Native speakers are exempt, as are applicants whose university certifies previous studies taught in English.
- Open to applicants of any nationality; dual nationals must declare a single nationality in the application.
- No age limit and no work-experience requirement are stated.

Application process
- 1Create an account on the i-MESC online portal and complete the application form; the same form is the application for an EMJM or industrial scholarship.
- 2Upload a passport or ID copy, proof of residence, certified English transcripts translated by a sworn translator, a Europass CV of at most two pages, two recommendation letters on the official template, and the English certificate.
- 3Record a video presentation of under two minutes (MP4, MOV or AVI, at most 200 MB) and write the statement of purpose.
- 4Submit before the portal closes automatically at 12:00 noon Paris time; nothing can be changed after that moment.
- 5Stage 1 checks the file for completeness; only complete files reach Stage 2, the academic assessment scored on a 150-point grid.
- 6Selected candidates confirm their place, and final-year Bachelor students send proof of graduation by 1 June.
