The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) funds young nephrologists from lower-resource countries to take in-person, mainly hands-on training at a host centre they find and arrange themselves, anywhere in the world.
Fellows return to their home institution to apply the skills there. The same application covers specialised routes such as the Ravi Mehta AKI Fellowship and Fellowships in Glomerular Diseases.
Benefits & funding
- A grant sized to training length and host-country costs, meant to cover or offset the fellow’s travel, accommodation and living (not family); no amount is published.
- 3–12 months of training; the host should charge no tuition.
- Duty: return home within three months and work at the home institution at least three years, or repay the grant.
- Other funding above US$10,000 pro rata reduces the grant.
Eligibility
- Living and working in a low-, lower-middle- or upper-middle-income country (World Bank list).
- Postgraduate internal medicine training completed in your home country.
- ISN full or trainee member; home and host mentors must be full ISN members.
- Employed at a public institution that guarantees re-employment; doctors in private settings are barred.
- Nominated by a home mentor and institution, and endorsed by the national (or regional) nephrology society.
- Not already training at the proposed host.
- 12-month clinical training: the six-module ISN Foundation Course must be completed first.
- Training is normally abroad; same-country training requires moving to a different city.
