FLEX Global Abroad (formerly FLEX Abroad) is a U.S. Department of State exchange, implemented by American Councils with AFS-USA and Amideast. It sends U.S. high school students abroad for about ten months.

Participants live with a host family and attend a local school in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, or Thailand. Extra programming covers business, entrepreneurship, technology, and leadership.

Benefits & funding

  • Round-trip airfare, host-family room and board, school tuition where applicable, visa fees, emergency accident and sickness coverage, and a modest monthly stipend.
  • Not covered: U.S. passport fees, required medical exams and immunizations, and personal spending money.
  • Participants must stay in the host country for the whole program; exceptions are considered only in cases of family emergencies.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizens only; permanent residents are not eligible.
  • Enrolled in grades 9–12 (home school included) when applying.
  • Aged 15 to 18½ at program start; the application lists birthdates from December 30, 2008 to June 30, 2012.
  • All GPAs welcome.
  • Barred: current or past participants of an academic-year program on the State Department’s youth exchange list, and State Department staff, their immediate family, and staff of partner organizations (during and one year after).
  • Designed mainly for students who have not lived abroad six months or more in the past five years.

Application process

    Submit the single American Councils application (shared with NSLI-Y; you may apply to both) by November 30, 2026.

    Evaluators review complete applications; semifinalists are interviewed over the winter.
  3. 3
    Results (finalist, alternate, or not accepted) and country assignments arrive on a rolling basis from spring.
  4. 4
    Finalists pass a medical review and obtain the host-country visa, which may mean handing over passports for over a month.
