The Forrest-Kerry Hill PhD Scholarship funds doctoral research in architecture and building design at any of Western Australia’s five universities. Forrest Research Foundation created it to honour architect Kerry Hill AO.

The scholar studies full time on a Western Australian campus, joins up to 40 Forrest Scholars at Forrest Hall in Perth, and receives mentoring. Rounds run once every four years; the 2026 round has closed and the next is due in 2029.

Benefits & funding

  • Package valued at over AU$270,000 for up to four years, conditional on satisfactory progress.
  • 2026 stipend: AU$34,315–37,500 a year, set by the enrolling university and indexed annually.
  • 2026 accommodation allowance of AU$25,740 for a Forrest Hall studio.
  • Up to AU$12,000 for research and travel, plus economy airfare to Perth for the scholar and immediate dependants.
  • Tuition covered by an RTP fees-offset scholarship; international scholars also get overseas student health cover.

Eligibility

  • Any nationality, from any country.
  • First-Class Honours bachelor’s or equivalent (e.g. Master of Research), with a GPA of 3.8/4.0 or higher.
  • Research in architecture, urban and regional design and planning, environmental engineering, urban and industrial design, landscape architecture or a related field, reflecting Kerry Hill’s work.
  • Must apply for full-time internal PhD study at a Western Australian campus of Curtin, Edith Cowan, Murdoch, Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle) or UWA; anyone already enrolled in that PhD or with past doctoral research is ineligible.
  • Meet the university’s English-language standard before applying.
  • A supervisor must agree to supervise you before you apply.
  • Scholars are expected to live at Forrest Hall; the Governors may grant exemptions.

Application process

    Agree a research plan with a supervisor at one of the five universities.
  2. 2
    Apply separately for the PhD and an RTP fees-offset scholarship at that university, by its own deadlines.
  3. 3
    Submit the Forrest form, CV, transcripts, a photo and three referees (at least two academic) through the Foundation portal; the last round closed 19 October 2025, 11:59pm AWST.

    Shortlisted candidates are interviewed; referees are usually contacted only at that stage.
