The Faculty of Laws Research Scholarships are annual awards for applicants to the UCL Laws MPhil/PhD programme in London. UCL Faculty of Laws awards them for academic excellence, research potential and research area.
Candidates apply to the PhD programme rather than completing a separate scholarship form. Every successful PhD applicant is automatically considered for the scholarship.
Benefits & funding
- The scholarship covers tuition fees and provides an annual maintenance stipend.
- The published 2026/27 stipend is £23,805 for full-time study as a guide; part-time funding is pro-rated.
- Funding is awarded initially for one year, renewed for year two after satisfactory completion of year one, and renewed for year three after upgrade to full PhD status and continued satisfactory progress.
Eligibility
- Apply successfully to the UCL Laws MPhil/PhD programme; applicants from the UK, Europe and other overseas jurisdictions are welcome.
- Normally hold at least an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree, or overseas equivalents, in law or another relevant subject.
- Applicants without a Master’s degree may exceptionally qualify through equivalent research or professional experience.
- Present an outstanding academic record, an excellent research proposal and strong references; the scholarship also considers research potential and research area.
- Meet UCL Laws’ English-language requirement when applicable and study in London, as the programme has no distance or non-resident route.

Application process
- 1Develop the research project and contact a potential UCL Laws supervisor whose expertise aligns with it.
- 2Apply online to the MPhil/PhD programme during the 2027/28 admissions window, submitting the transcript, research proposal, referee details and any required English-language evidence.
- 3Ensure two academic referees submit their references within 10 working days after the application deadline.
- 4Submit the PhD application by 19 November 2026 at 5:00 p.m.; no separate scholarship application is required.
