EU-CORE is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master run by three European universities: Centrale Nantes in France as coordinator, the University of Zagreb in Croatia and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in Germany.

It covers wind, solar, thermal, hydrogen and storage systems together with their integration into power grids. The aim is engineers who can design the control technology for a whole renewable energy system.

The degree is 120 ECTS across four semesters, taught and examined in English. Students move Nantes to Zagreb to Cottbus over the first three semesters, and this mobility is compulsory. The fourth semester is a master’s thesis at a partner university or an associated company, and graduates receive a joint Master of Science in Control of Renewable Energy Systems awarded by all three universities.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus+ EMJM scholarship: tuition waived for holders of any nationality, plus €1,400 a month for 24 months covering travel, visa, installation and living costs.
  • 20 EMJM scholarships are funded per edition, from the 2025-2027 intake through the 2028-2030 intake.
  • Consortium scholarships for strong applicants without EMJM funding: 100% tuition reduction for the three best-ranked, 75% for ranks four to six, 50% for ranks seven to nine.
  • Up to nine consortium awards each for partner-country and programme-country applicants.
  • Without a scholarship, tuition is €18,000 over two years for partner-country students and €9,000 for programme-country students; the fee excludes books, accommodation and meals.
  • More than 15 associated partners, universities and companies worldwide, host fourth-semester thesis work.
  • Scholarship holders commit not to hold another EU-funded scholarship for the same programme.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of any nationality; the consortium states that students from all over the world are eligible for the Erasmus+ scholarship.
  • A first university degree worth 180 ECTS at BSc level in mechanical, electrical or process engineering, or a combination of those fields.
  • Knowledge of automatic control is mandatory.
  • Final-year students may apply with an official university confirmation letter if they graduate by 31 July (non-European applicants) or 30 September (European applicants).
  • Proof of English is mandatory: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 / ITP 550 / CBT 220, TOEIC 800, Cambridge B2 First 173 or C1 Advanced 160, with a certificate no older than three years; GRE is not accepted.
  • Applicants whose university studies were taught in English can send an official confirmation letter from their university instead of a test score.
  • No age, work-experience or residency requirement.

Application process

    Register on the application platform at eu-core.ec-nantes.fr and fill in the online form.

    Upload the CV, a passport or identity card scan, certified degrees with transcripts and diploma supplement in official English translation, the motivation letter written on the consortium’s mandatory template, and the English certificate.

    Submit before 31 January to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus or Consortium scholarship, or before 15 May to enrol self-funded.

    The selection committee ranks candidates onto a main list and a reserve list; the 60 best pre-selected candidates for Erasmus Mundus funding are interviewed by videoconference.
  5. 5
    Scholarship results are announced at the end of April or the beginning of May, and reserve-list candidates can still move up until the programme starts in September.
