The European Master of Science in Nuclear Fusion and Engineering Physics is a two-year, research-oriented joint degree run by the FUSION-EP Consortium. It trains physicists and engineers in magnetic-confinement fusion through Fusion Science and Fusion Technology tracks.
Students study at a different European university in each master year and complete a fourth-semester thesis placement with a partner or in industry. The latest selected cohort started in September 2026; dates for the next application campaign have not yet been announced.
Benefits & funding
- The 2026–28 campaign offers no EMJMD scholarships; admitted students are self-funded.
- Annual participation fees are EUR 4,800 for programme-country students and EUR 7,800 for partner-country students.
- The fee covers host-university tuition, travel and accommodation for five joint events across two years, and full health insurance.
- Depending on study site and circumstances, students may later seek Erasmus+ second-year support of about EUR 300 per month, French thesis support, FuseNet mobility support, or other conditional schemes.
Eligibility
- Applicants from all countries may apply; there is no nationality or residency restriction.
- Applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent comprising at least three full-time years or 180 ECTS in physics or engineering; final-year students may apply if they graduate before the next academic year starts.
- Fusion Science applicants need foundations in quantum mechanics, statistical physics and thermodynamics, electromagnetism, mathematics, and programming; Fusion Technology applicants need electromagnetism, engineering mathematics and programming, thermodynamics, and materials science.
- English at CEFR C1 is required, evidenced by an accepted test, at least 120 ECTS in a primarily English-taught higher-education curriculum, or native-speaker status.

Application process

- 2Prepare an English CV, a one-page cover letter and motivation statement, a full course list and transcripts, degree documentation or proof of expected graduation, proof of English, and a qualifying passport where applicable.
- 3Submit during the published campaign window; campaigns generally run from mid-November to mid-February, while exact dates for the next campaign remain undecided.
- 4If selected, confirm participation within one week and begin host-university registration with the local coordinator.
