Sapienza University of Rome pays a scholarship under Italian Law 398/89 to students attending its specialisation schools in three areas: protection and management of cultural heritage, legal professions, and chemical risk assessment and management.
The award is not won through a separate competition. Sapienza allocates a fixed number of scholarships to each school every year, and the places go to the candidates ranked highest in that school’s own admission list.
Recipients are graduates enrolled in a two-year specialisation school in Rome. The scholarship runs for the full legal length of the course, provided the holder passes each year’s exams and stays under the income ceiling.
Benefits & funding
- €6,715.00 gross for each year of the specialisation school’s legal duration.
- Paid in two instalments per year: 60% on enrolment, 40% after passing the year’s final exam or all exams needed to enrol in the next year.
- Exempt from personal income tax under Law 476/84 art. 4.
- 23 scholarships across nine schools for the 2026/27 academic year, ranging from 1 place (Beni musicali) to 4 places (Beni archivistici e librari; Beni storico artistici).
- Holders may not be assigned teaching duties.
Eligibility
- Open to Italian and non-Italian citizens alike; the page states no nationality requirement.
- The candidate must place high enough in the admission ranking of an eligible Sapienza specialisation school and enrol regularly.
- Eligible schools: seven cultural-heritage schools (archaeology; architecture and landscape; archives and books; demo-ethno-anthropology; music; natural and territorial heritage; art history), legal professions, and chemical risk assessment and management.
- Personal gross annual income must stay at or below €7,750 in the calendar year of greatest benefit; property income and recurring payments count towards that limit.
- The candidate must never have held a scholarship for another specialisation school.
- Continuing beyond the first year requires passing the annual final exam, or all exams needed to enrol in the following year, and enrolling in that year.

Application process
- 1Apply for and sit the admission examination of one of the eligible Sapienza specialisation schools.
- 2Enrol in the school after placing in a useful position in its admission ranking.
- 3The school registry sends the ranking to Sapienza’s Settore Diritto allo Studio, which emails the students in scholarship-winning positions.
- 4Return the scholarship acceptance declaration, self-certifying the income figure and that no other specialisation-school scholarship has been held or is held at the same time.
- 5Submit the first-instalment request form at enrolment, and the second-instalment form after passing the year’s exams.
