EMIMEP trains engineers in microwave engineering and photonic technologies across four European universities, with the University of Limoges coordinating the consortium. Every student takes semester 1 in Limoges and semester 2 in Brescia, then picks a semester 3 track: greener power management in Limoges, communication technologies in Brescia, high-frequency technologies in Bilbao, or optics, photonics and quantum technologies in Jena.
The fourth semester is a master thesis, carried out at a partner university or at one of the associated companies and research centres, supervised by a professor from the consortium. All teaching is in English, the degree is worth 120 ECTS over four semesters, and each institution where a student spent at least one semester issues a diploma.
The European Union co-funds the programme and pays full Erasmus Mundus scholarships to the best-ranked applicants worldwide. More than 55 associated partners, from small firms to large companies and associations, support the programme and open thesis and internship routes into industry.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus scholarship: 1,400 euros per month for the full duration of the programme, up to 24 months.
- The scholarship also covers participation costs in full and provides health and travel insurance for the whole study period; the monthly allowance is intended to absorb travel, visa and living costs.
- Self-funded students pay participation costs of up to 750 euros per month of study; the consortium awards fee waivers to some of them, covering full registration for both academic years.
- Participation costs are the same for scholarship holders and self-funded students, and buy full-time registration, health insurance, access to university facilities, the library and IT infrastructure, student services, and the social events of the integration week.
- The fee also covers the Research and Industrial Week in Cluj-Napoca, attendance at European Microwave Week, and the EMIMEP summer school.
- Accommodation, food, international travel and local travel are not included.
Eligibility
- A bachelor degree worth 180 ECTS at the time of application, in electronic and electrical engineering, telecommunication engineering, photonics or applied physics.
- At least four weeks of cumulative work or research experience, positively assessed.
- English at CEFR B1 as the minimum level; applicants from countries where English is not the working language must file an official TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic result.
- Three reference letters, one of them from a non-academic referee.
- Admission is open to applicants of any nationality. The EU scholarship itself follows the Erasmus+ country lists: EU member states and associated countries plus the twelve non-associated third-country regions qualify, while Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican City State and the Faroe Islands are outside that funding.
- Applicants who already hold an Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot receive a second one.
- Every document must be issued in English or accompanied by a certified translation, and the file includes proof of employment covering the previous five years plus a declaration of residence.

Application process
- 1Gather the required file: motivation letter, certified high school diploma, bachelor degree and transcripts, passport or ID, CV, residence declaration, English test result, three reference letters and five years of employment records.

- 3Submit before the March deadline; one application covers both admission and the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
- 4The assessment committee scores the written file: average marks and credits from university exams 50 per cent, previous professional or research experience 10 per cent, quality of reference letters, publications and internship reports 20 per cent, and continuity in the career 20 per cent.
- 5Shortlisted candidates sit an interview in English on their motivation and their basic knowledge of the programme subjects.
- 6The final ranking combines interview score 70 per cent with the written review 30 per cent, producing a main list and a reserve list; the official selection list is known around April.
