EUROPHOTONICS is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in photonics, coordinated by Aix-Marseille Université with KIT, the Barcelona universities, Tampere University and Vilnius University. Teaching is in English.

Students earn 120 ECTS over two years: a first semester in Marseille, a second in Marseille or Karlsruhe ending with a 2–4-month internship, a specialisation semester at one of the five sites, then a master thesis in a lab or company.

Benefits & funding

  • EMJM scholarship: €1,400 a month for up to 24 months, plus a full tuition and registration fee waiver.
  • Consortium scholarship: €600 a month for up to 24 months; fees are payable unless separately waived.
  • AMIDEX TIGER scholarship: €10,000 a year for one or two years, on a fixed Marseille–Karlsruhe–Marseille path.
  • Reserve List students pay their own fees, e.g. €2,500 a semester for non-EU students in Barcelona.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor or licence of at least 180 ECTS in physics, optics and photonics, electrical or mechanical engineering, physical chemistry or applied physics; final-year students may apply.
  • Usually at least 12 ECTS each in physics and mathematics.
  • English at B2: TOEFL iBT 88, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120 or TOEIC 785, or at least 10 months of English-taught degree study.
  • Any nationality; at most 10% of EMJM awards go to one nationality.
  • Past EMJM scholarship holders cannot get another; TIGER excludes French nationals, dual nationals and anyone previously enrolled in French higher education.

Application process

    Apply online from 1 November 2026 to 4 February 2027, 5 pm Paris time; one application covers admission and every scholarship.

    Two referees, at least one a faculty member, upload their letters before the deadline; relatives and students cannot refer.

    Shortlisted candidates, told from 10 March, sit an online interview that tests English, 15–29 March.

    Results arrive by email from 5 April.
