Benefits & funding

• EMJM scholarship: €1,400 a month for the whole programme, 24 months maximum, plus a full waiver of registration and tuition fees; it is meant to cover travel, visa, installation and living costs.
• AMIDEX TIGER scholarship: one- or two-year awards of €10,000 each, funded by the Aix-Marseille Université AMIDEX–TIGER project and paid in three instalments a year.
• Consortium scholarship: €600 a month for the whole programme, 24 months maximum, for candidates entering at Master 1 level.
• One online application covers admission and all three scholarships; there is no separate scholarship form.
• Main List candidates receive a full tuition-fee waiver and the EMJM scholarship; Short List candidates receive the waiver and possibly a non-EMJM scholarship; Reserve List candidates are admitted but self-financed.
• Self-financed costs follow the mobility path: Marseille charges €103 CVEC plus about €250 registration a year, with a tuition-fee waiver for EU and non-EU students; KIT about €150 a semester, plus €1,500 a semester for non-EU students where no cooperation waiver applies; Barcelona €830 a semester for EU and €2,500 for non-EU per 30 ECTS; Tampere about €150 a year, with a tuition-fee waiver for every Europhotonics student; Vilnius about €5,550 a year, a figure the site marks as to be confirmed.
• Erasmus+ mobility grants are open to self-financed students for semesters 2 to 4 depending on the path, and cannot be combined with the EMJM scholarship.
• Students with a long-term impairment certified by a national authority can receive extra support for equipment, third-party assistance, adapted working conditions and travel, capped by the EMJM special-needs budget.

Eligibility

• A bachelor or licence degree worth at least 180 ECTS in physics, optics and photonics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical chemistry or applied physics.
• A solid grounding in physics and mathematics, typically at least 12 ECTS in each during the bachelor.
• English at level B2: TOEFL iBT 88, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120 or TOEIC 785; a university certificate replaces the test if at least 10 months of coursework were taught in English.
• Candidates graduating in the same academic year may apply with an enrolment certificate and current transcripts.
• Open to applicants of every nationality; no age limit and no work-experience requirement are stated.
• Applicants not seeking an EMJM scholarship must document funds for tuition and living costs in the host countries; EMJM holders are exempt.
• Scholarship conditions: a previous EMJM scholarship rules a candidate out, no other EU grant may run in parallel, enrolment must be full-time, and EMJM awards are capped at 10% per nationality.
• The AMIDEX TIGER award adds its own conditions: no previous enrolment at a French higher-education institution, no French or dual French nationality, and no other scholarship above €1,000 a month.
• Two of the countries studied in during the master must differ from the country of residence at enrolment.
• Dual nationals pick one nationality for the application; a national ID number is accepted when there is no passport.

Application process

   Check the entry requirements, and the proof-of-funds requirement if you are not applying for an EMJM scholarship.

   Create a personal account on the application software at application.europhotonics.org.

   Complete the online profile and upload a photo and proof of nationality.

   Upload a motivation letter of two pages maximum, degree diplomas, academic transcripts and a residence certificate issued within the past 12 months, each with an official English translation.

   Upload the English proficiency evidence.

   Nominate two referees from your institution; they upload their letters themselves.

   Check that every document, reference letters included, is in the file, then validate it — an unsubmitted application is not evaluated.

   Admissibility: two evaluators from different partner universities score the file and place it on the admissibility or non-admissibility list.

   Admission: candidates on the admissibility list sit an online oral interview before panels from several partner universities.

    Results arrive by email, placing each candidate on the Main, Short, Reserve or Non-Selected List; an appeal on procedure goes to the committee within seven working days.
