GEM is a two-year, English-taught joint master in geo-information science and earth observation for environmental work, coordinated by the University of Twente’s ITC faculty with Lund University, UCLouvain and the University of Tartu.

Students pick one of four tracks and spend each year at a different university: Planner (Tartu, Twente), Analyst (Tartu, UCLouvain), Developer (Lund, Twente) or Modeller (Lund, UCLouvain). Graduates receive a double degree.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship: tuition waiver, full insurance and €1,400 a month for up to 24 months; the allowance must cover housing, travel, visa and laptop.
  • About 17–18 scholarships for the 2027–2029 intake across all four tracks.
  • Self-funded tuition for the whole course: €5,500 (residents of EU and associated countries) or €19,800 (others), payable in two instalments; living costs are estimated at €30,000.

Eligibility

  • Open to all nationalities; no age limit.
  • A bachelor’s of at least 180 ECTS with First or Upper Second Class (2.1) results, meeting the partner universities’ country-specific minimum GPA; final-year students may apply if the degree is in by 31 July 2027.
  • The awarding university must rank in the Webometrics top 10,000.
  • A background related to geospatial or environmental science, planning, engineering, computer or data science.
  • IELTS Academic 6.5 (6.0 per section) or an accepted equivalent, valid at the deadline; Duolingo and online IELTS are not accepted.
  • Scholarship only: no earlier Erasmus Mundus scholarship, and both study years must be outside your country of residence.

Application process

    Apply through the University of Twente’s DreamApply portal by 15 January 2027 (23:59 CET); there is no fee and you may choose one track only.

    Upload degree documents, English test, passport and a CV of at most two pages on the GEM template; no motivation or reference letters.
  3. 3
    A complete application by the deadline is considered for the scholarship automatically.
  4. 4
    About the top 25 applicants per track record an online interview in February–March; only they can receive a scholarship.
