Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term development scholarships funded by the Australian Government and administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). They enable people from partner developing countries — with a focus on the Indo-Pacific — to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and TAFE institutions. The program aims to build the skills and leadership of scholars who will contribute to development back home, and each participating country runs its own selection round with its own eligibility rules and priority fields of study.
Benefits & funding
- Full tuition fees at the host Australian institution
- Return air travel to and from Australia
- A one-off establishment allowance for accommodation set-up, textbooks and study materials
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award
- A fortnightly contribution to living expenses (rate set by DFAT)
- Academic and English-language support services where needed
Eligibility
- Open to citizens of participating developing countries, primarily in the Indo-Pacific region. Each participating country publishes its own Country Profile setting the exact eligible nationalities, priority study fields and closing dates — check the profile for your country of citizenship before applying.
- For undergraduate study, applicants apply from a secondary-school qualification; for postgraduate study, applicants normally hold a completed Bachelor’s degree.
- Applicants must not hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency and must not be applying while in Australia.
- Applicants must meet the academic, work-experience and English-language requirements set in their Country Profile.
- Scholars must agree to leave Australia for at least two years after completing the award; not doing so results in a debt for the full cost of the scholarship.
Application process
- 1Select your country of citizenship and read its Country Profile for eligibility, priority fields and specific opening and closing dates.
- 2Choose eligible courses at participating Australian institutions using the correct CRICOS course codes.
- 3Apply online through DFAT’s OASIS application system, completing every required section.
- 4Upload all supporting documents (academic records, identity, references and any country-specific forms) before the deadline.
