The ASiT – Edinburgh Surgery Online Bursary is offered by the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) together with the University of Edinburgh to help surgical trainees fund part-time, fully online postgraduate study. It supports students on the MSc in Surgical Sciences or the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors, both delivered entirely online and run with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). The award is worth £1,500 per year of study and is credited toward tuition fees rather than paid to the student. It is aimed at trainees who are ASiT members, resident in the UK, and working in a supervised clinical environment while they study.
Benefits & funding
- £1,500 per academic year, up to a maximum of £4,500 across the three years of the MSc.
- Credited toward the settlement of tuition fees; not paid directly to the student.
- Automatically rolls over into the next year on successful academic progression — no need to reapply each year.
- Applies to the online MSc in Surgical Sciences or the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors (each three years, part-time).
Eligibility
- Current member of the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT).
- Resident in the UK for the duration of the programme, and working in a supervised clinical environment in the UK.
- Holds, or has firmly accepted, an offer of a place at the University of Edinburgh on an eligible online MSc — applicants must have at least a conditional offer, and unconditional-offer holders are prioritised.
- Entry to the MSc itself requires an accredited medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) and that the applicant does not yet hold MRCS.
- Open to all nationalities; the gates are UK residency and ASiT membership, not citizenship.
Application process
- 1Apply for, and secure at least a conditional offer on, an eligible online MSc at the University of Edinburgh.
- 2Make sure your ASiT membership is current.
- 3Submit the bursary application with a personal statement of no more than 400 words, covering your financial need and how you will continue clinical work alongside study, before the annual deadline.
