Tsinghua University runs this immersive laboratory research program in Beijing for full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled outside the Chinese Mainland or in Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan. Participants join a host laboratory for at least six weeks and receive one-to-one faculty mentorship rather than academic credit.

Research themes span energy transition, AI for science, intelligent manufacturing, life sciences and health, and interdisciplinary global collaboration. The 2026 program period runs from January 1 to November 30, with individual dates arranged with the host laboratory.

  • Participants receive a tailored research plan and one-to-one guidance from a Tsinghua faculty mentor.
  • Participants are responsible for all other costs.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be non-Mainland Chinese citizens or non-permanent residents of Mainland China.
  • Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students at a university outside the Chinese Mainland or in Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan.
  • Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least one year of study before the program begins.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent, is required.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English; Chinese is not required.
  • Strong motivation and research interest are required.

Application process

    Identify a suitable Tsinghua laboratory and contact a potential faculty mentor with a CV and research proposal.
  2. 2
    Obtain the mentor’s verbal agreement; the mentor then confirms the placement with the Office of International Affairs.
  3. 3
    Submit the online application with an English CV, a 500–1000-word research proposal, the latest official transcript, English-proficiency evidence, a passport copy, and one or two English recommendation letters.

    Add published papers, awards, or other supporting material when applicable.
