The University of Zurich’s Student Financial Aid Office awards need-based scholarships to students in a first Bachelor’s or first Master’s program. The money comes from university foundations, private foundations and donations.

Applications are taken each semester and judged on the student’s and parents’ finances and on academic progress. The aid supplements, never replaces, parental support and cantonal or home-country scholarships.

Benefits & funding

  • Generally non-repayable; paid for the whole semester, possibly in several payments from foundations the office chooses.
  • The amount depends on your means; the office assumes a single person without children needs about CHF 12,000 per semester.
  • Own earnings up to CHF 6,000 a year do not reduce it; CHF 5,000 of own assets is exempt.
  • Support can continue in later semesters if finances and grades hold, with no legal entitlement.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled at UZH in a first Bachelor’s or first Master’s program; no doctoral or CAS/DAS/MAS students.
  • Parents’ taxable income at most CHF 86,000 (plus CHF 6,000 per additional child in initial education); net worth at most CHF 300,000.
  • Other sources exhausted, and an application already filed with the parents’ cantonal or home-country scholarship office.
  • Good academic results within a reasonable time.
  • International Bachelor’s students: after the first year (55+ ECTS), or after one semester with very good grades.
  • Protection Status S: no completed degree, 55 ECTS at UZH, 20+ ECTS per semester, grade average 4.5+.
  • International Master’s students need a Swiss Bachelor’s degree.

Application process

    Apply first to your cantonal or home-country scholarship office; its decision may come later.
  2. 2
    Gather your and your parents’ latest tax returns and final tax assessments (no Swiss tax return: six months of statements for all bank accounts).
  3. 3
    Apply in the online portal (form in German) with your UZH email, at most two months before the deadline.
  4. 4
    Submit by 15 August (autumn) or 1 February (spring).
