The University of Western Australia (UWA) runs an annual International Scholarship Round for its Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs — doctorate by research and master by research. Funding flows through the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP): a tuition-fee offset and a living-allowance stipend, awarded together to the strongest applicants. Recipients relocate to UWA’s campus in Perth, Western Australia, to carry out a supervised research thesis. A single application to the online HDR portal is assessed for both admission and scholarship.

  • RTP Stipend (living allowance): A$38,110 per annum (2026 value), tax-free.
  • RTP Tuition Fees Offset: full tuition covered — up to four years’ full-time equivalent for a doctorate, up to two years for a master by research.
  • RTP Allowances toward ancillary costs such as relocation and research expenses (amount not published on the main page).
  • Awarded to a limited number of international students through competitive, merit-based selection.

Eligibility

  • Applicants for admission to a UWA doctorate by research or master by research.
  • Open to international students; no nationality is excluded.
  • Academic entry requires a strong prior degree (typically a Bachelor with honours or a Master’s, depending on the program) and a suitable research proposal plus supervisor.
  • Standard UWA English-language requirements apply.
