Uppsala University awards a limited number of scholarships each year to international Master’s students who are liable for tuition fees, and the Global Scholarship is the one open to the widest field of applicants. It is funded by the Swedish Council for Higher Education, the government agency that oversees Swedish higher education, and it pays the full tuition fee for one of the university’s international Master’s programmes. Uppsala offers over 120 such programmes, all taught in English on its campuses in the Swedish city of Uppsala.

Living costs remain the student’s own responsibility. The award follows the admission application: candidates apply for the programme through the national portal University Admissions with the Uppsala programme ranked first, then submit a separate online scholarship form. Competition is heavy — the university states that about 2% of applicants are granted a scholarship.

Benefits & funding

  • The full tuition fee of the Master’s programme the recipient is admitted to, for the programme ranked first priority.
  • Tuition at Uppsala runs between SEK 49,500 and SEK 90,000 per semester depending on the programme; a two-year programme such as Medical Research is priced at SEK 330,000 in total, so the award is worth six figures in kronor.
  • Funded by the Swedish Council for Higher Education; the university runs the selection and the payment.
  • Living expenses, travel and insurance are not covered, and the scholarship carries no cash stipend.

Eligibility

  • Citizens of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.
  • The applicant must be liable to pay tuition fees. Holders of Swedish permanent residence, and holders of temporary Swedish residence granted for reasons other than study, pay no fees and therefore fall outside the scheme.
  • The applicant must have applied for an international Master’s programme at Uppsala University before the University Admissions deadline and ranked that programme as first priority of the four choices allowed.
  • The applicant must meet the entry requirements of that programme, which for a Master’s programme means a completed Bachelor’s degree.
  • The applicant must demonstrate academic talent and an interest in being in an educational environment.
  • Seven Master’s programmes are excluded from the scholarships: Joint Nordic Master’s Programme in Environmental Law; Master’s Programme in Biology – NABiS Nordic Master in Biodiversity and Systematics; Master’s Programme in Evolutionary Biology – MEME; Master’s Programme in Implementation, Transformative Learning and Sustainability; Master’s Programme in Religion in Peace and Conflict; Master’s Programme in Transformative Game Design; Master’s Programme in Turkic Studies.
  • No age limit, gender requirement or work-experience requirement is published. Financial need is not a factor in the selection.
