Official Page

The University of Verona (Università degli Studi di Verona) is a public research university in northern Italy that admits doctoral candidates through one call each year. The 42nd-cycle call, for academic year 2026/2027, funded 104 scholarships across more than twenty doctoral programmes grouped in four macro-areas: life and health sciences, law and economics, natural sciences and engineering, and arts and humanities. Doctoral candidates move to Verona for three years — four for Economics and Finance — and work full time on supervised research towards the dottorato di ricerca, Italy’s highest academic degree.

Admission is open to graduates of any nationality with no age limit, and several programmes teach and examine in English. The 42nd-cycle round closed on 9 June 2026 and the programmes began on 1 October 2026; the next call is expected in spring 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • A doctoral scholarship of €17,602.57 gross per year, paid in monthly instalments for the whole programme; INPS social-security contributions are deducted from that gross figure.
  • 104 funded places in the 42nd-cycle ordinary call, split across the individual programmes (for example 7 funded places in Computer Science and 6 in Human Sciences).
  • A separate national programme in Kinesiology and Sport Sciences, run with ten Italian universities and nine companies, funded 30 further scholarships in the same cycle.
  • Enrolment costs are limited to €208 paid at pre-enrolment (€192 regional education tax plus €16 stamp duty); the university has dropped its earlier €250 annual flat-rate fee.
  • Access to the university’s laboratories, libraries and research groups, within a structured doctoral path of 180 research credits (CFR) alongside the thesis.

Eligibility

  • Applicants hold an Italian laurea magistrale or laurea specialistica, or a foreign postgraduate degree that gives access to doctoral study in the country that awarded it.
  • Professional qualifications such as an MBA are not accepted as the entry degree.
  • Candidates who have not yet graduated may apply, provided the degree is in hand by the enrolment date.
  • No nationality requirement and no age limit.
  • Holders of a non-EU qualification submit recognition documents at enrolment, typically a “dichiarazione di valore in loco”.
  • Teaching and examination language depends on the programme: some run in English, others in Italian.
  • Each programme sets its own subject requirements, number of places and selection format, published in its sheet attached to the call.
