The University of Turin (Università degli Studi di Torino), one of Italy’s largest and oldest public research universities, runs a single yearly call admitting doctoral candidates to dozens of PhD programmes across four macro-areas — Arts and Humanities, Life and Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social and Economic Sciences. Successful applicants join a three- or four-year doctorate (Dottorato di ricerca), Italy’s highest academic degree, based in Turin with funded research and international mobility. The call is open to graduates of any nationality who hold a postgraduate degree or a recognised foreign equivalent. The 42nd-cycle call (academic year 2026/2027) was published in May 2026 and has now closed; the next cycle is expected to open in spring 2027.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities.
  • Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree (a Master’s / laurea magistrale) or a recognised foreign equivalent by the stated deadline, as specified for each programme.
  • Admission is by programme-specific competition — evaluation of qualifications and a research proposal, usually followed by an interview.
  • Language of study is programme-dependent: some PhD courses run in English, others in Italian.
  • Admitted non-EU candidates must obtain an Italian study visa and residence permit.
