University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship (USYDIS)

The University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship supports international students starting or continuing a master’s by research or research doctorate at the University of Sydney. Recipients undertake their research degree in Sydney under University supervision.

Awards are competitive and assessed on academic merit, research experience, the quality of the research environment and resources, and supervisory arrangements. The University normally expects recipients to study full-time.

Benefits & funding

AUD 42,754 per year at the 2026 rate, indexed annually on 1 January.
Stipend tenure of up to 7 research periods for a research master’s or 14 research periods for a research doctorate.
Automatic University of Sydney International Tuition Fee Scholarship covering 100% of tuition for USYDIS recipients, for the stipend duration and no more than 14 research periods.
Eligible students relocating to Sydney may claim up to AUD 1,485 for travel at commencement and up to AUD 1,485 for return travel after successful completion.
Eligible thesis-production costs may be reimbursed up to AUD 420 for research master’s candidates or AUD 840 for doctoral candidates.

Eligibility

The applicant must be classified as an international student when the award is made.
The applicant must apply for admission to, or already be enrolled in, a University of Sydney higher degree by research: a master’s by research or research doctorate.
New applicants must submit all required admission documents and a separate scholarship application.
Recipients are expected to enrol full-time; part-time awards are considered only in approved special circumstances and remain subject to visa rules.
Selection is competitive and based on academic merit, research experience, the available research environment and resources, and supervisory quality.
Preference may be given to PhD applicants and to applicants who have neither completed an equivalent research degree nor previously received an Australian Government or University scholarship for one.

Application process

A new applicant applies for admission to a higher degree by research through Sydney Courses and submits all required admission documents.

The applicant submits the separate RTP and equivalent University Scholarships form by the deadline; current students submit the scholarship form for the relevant round.

Current students prepare official transcripts, qualification records, grading information, and certified translations where needed as one PDF.

Applicants may submit research-experience evidence in the University’s required format; it is optional but must follow the published guide to be considered.

The University assesses the scholarship application with the admission record and sends the outcome by email.
