University of Groningen Talent Grant: Partial Scholarship Law

Benefits & funding

• A monthly allowance of approximately 1,000 euro, paid for a maximum of 12 months by the Faculty of Law.
• Approximately 4 to 8 grants are available per intake.
• The award is partial by design. Tuition on these LL.M. programmes is 22,200 euro for students from outside the EU and EEA in 2026-2027, and recipients still pay it.
• No travel, insurance or research allowance is published alongside the monthly payment.

Eligibility

• Open to candidates with conditional or full admission to one of seven LL.M. programmes at the Faculty of Law: Energy and Climate Law, Global Criminal Law, International Commercial Law, Advanced European Union Law, Public International Law, Health and Technology Law, and Technology Law and Innovation. The International Human Rights Law LL.M. is not on the scholarship’s list.
• Nationality: applicants must come from one of the roughly 190 countries and territories listed on the scholarship page; the list includes Liechtenstein, Malta, Micronesia (Federated States), Norway, South Sudan, and the generic entry “non-EEA country”.
• Intended for applicants who can finance part of the LL.M. themselves but not all of it.
• LL.M. admission requires a university law degree that entitles the holder to practise in their own country or that completes the academic stage of legal education, such as an LLB.
• A grade average equivalent to 7.0 out of 10 on the Dutch scale, taken across all marks of the bachelor degree.
• IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, or an accepted equivalent, for applicants who are not native English speakers.
• Current Groningen bachelor students may apply, but priority goes to applicants who have not studied at the university before.
• Anyone currently taking or already holding a Groningen LL.M. cannot apply.
• No age limit, gender requirement or work experience requirement is published.

Application process

   Pick one of the seven eligible LL.M. programmes and check your country against the list of countries of origin on the scholarship page.

   Apply for admission through the Faculty of Law application portal, uploading certified transcripts and degree certificate, one academic reference letter, a CV, and a motivation letter of at most 650 words.

   Upload every admission document before 1 May. The programmes are selective and an incomplete file is not assessed.

   Once you hold conditional admission, complete the separate application form for the Talent Grant: Partial Scholarship Law on the Faculty of Law website and upload a motivation letter for the grant.

   Submit the grant form by 1 May and send any question to the LL.M. office at LLM@rug.nl.

   Wait for the faculty decision. No interview stage is published for this grant.
