The Dottorato di Ricerca (Research Doctorate / PhD) is the third cycle of Italian higher education. The University of Florence (Università degli Studi di Firenze) runs an open competition every year — this is Cycle 42, for the 2026/27 academic year — admitting candidates to 30+ doctoral programmes spanning the sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, architecture and the arts. Doctoral candidates carry out independent research over three years alongside seminars, training and international mobility. Candidates who win a scholarship position receive a state living stipend, and the whole application is completed online.
Benefits & funding
- Scholarship (borsa di studio): €16,243.00 gross per year, paid in deferred monthly instalments across the three-year programme.
- Research budget: an added share equal to about 10% of the scholarship for research in Italy and abroad — at least €4,872.90 over the three years.
- Mobility: the monthly stipend is increased by 50% for authorised research periods abroad, up to a maximum of 18 months.
- Fees: scholarship holders are exempt from the €140 regional study tax; enrolment otherwise requires only a €16 stamp duty.
- Note: each programme’s call fixes its own number of positions and scholarships; some positions may be offered without a scholarship.
Eligibility
- Open to applicants of any nationality — no citizenship limit and no age limit.
- Requires a master’s-level degree held by the call deadline: an Italian Laurea Magistrale/Specialistica (or a pre-2004 Laurea of at least four years, or an AFAM second-level diploma), or a foreign qualification that gives access to doctoral study in its country and is comparable in level, duration and disciplinary scope.
- Foreign qualifications must be submitted with an Italian or English translation; at enrolment a legalised translation plus a Declaration of Value (DOV) is required.
- Non-EU candidates already holding external government, EU or international scholarships may be admitted as supernumerary places.
