UNIDIR’s Graduate Professional Programme places graduate students and recent graduates inside the UN’s independent disarmament-research institute for a six-month term. This posting recruits two participants for the Space Security programme in Geneva, Switzerland, supporting research and events on the security dimensions of outer space. Participants work alongside UNIDIR researchers on projects, meetings, and publications, with a choice of in-person or remote participation. It is a stipend-supported training placement rather than a salaried post.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly stipend: USD 1,331 for in-person participants, or USD 665.50 for remote participants.
  • If you already receive a stipend from another source, it is topped up.
  • Six-month term, with possible extension.
  • Hands-on exposure to UN disarmament and space-security work in Geneva.
  • Note: participants cover their own travel, visa, accommodation, and insurance; medical insurance for the full term and a medical certificate of good health are required before starting.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate (master’s or higher) programme, or graduated within the past year.
  • Preference for a background in international relations, political science, international law, or security.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required; knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
  • No professional experience required; no nationality or age restriction is stated.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
