The University of Bologna pays for 12 scholarships and the matching catering services every year for students who hold international protection. The awards sit inside Unibo for Refugees, the university’s set of measures for refugee and displaced students.
There is no separate application. The 12 awards are handed out through the general calls run by ER.GO, the Emilia-Romagna regional agency for the right to university study, so applicants follow ER.GO’s ordinary procedure and deadlines.
An ER.GO scholarship is a cash sum paid in instalments across the academic year. Recipients also receive a full tuition exemption, a refund of the regional study tax, and the option to convert part of the award into prepaid credit at university canteens.
Benefits & funding
- Cash award for a.y. 2026/27 at an ISEE up to €16,666.67: €7,171.11 for non-resident (fuori sede) students, €4,190.71 for commuters, €2,890.16 for students living at home.
- Amounts rise by 15% where the ISEE is €12,500 or lower, reaching €8,246.78 for non-resident students.
- Female students on STEM courses receive a further 20% on the standard amounts.
- At an ISEE between €20,818.47 and €25,000 the award is €3,585.56 / €2,095.36 / €1,445.08.
- Full exemption from tuition fees and a refund of the regional tax for the right to study.
- Part of the award can be converted into prepaid catering credit; Unibo funds the catering services attached to these 12 scholarships.
- Published figures exclude the regional tax refund and already account for the catering conversion.
Eligibility
- Holding a residence permit for international protection; the 12 reserved awards are financed by Unibo for this group.
- Enrolled at the University of Bologna, or completing enrolment by the deadlines set in the ER.GO call.
- ISEE for university right-to-study of €25,000 or less and ISPE of €50,000 or less.
- A minimum number of credits (CFU) each academic year, counted only if recorded by 10 August; the merit table is read from the year of first enrolment at any university.
- No nationality condition: protection status, not citizenship, is the gate.
- ER.GO’s instalment rules also list doctoral enrolment, but the Unibo page does not say whether the 12 reserved awards reach doctoral students.

Application process

- 6If you claim non-resident status, file the online domicile self-certification by 3 November 2026, 16:00, and the supporting documents by 14 January 2027.
