Scout Adventures runs this residential pathway for adults who want to begin a career in outdoor instruction. Participants live at one of five UK centres and spend an average of 35 hours per week delivering activities to young people, training and supporting centre operations.

The programme combines an initial course, core qualifications and a personalised development phase. The official page describes an 11-month commitment and currently lists September 2026–September 2027 and January 2027–November 2027 placement windows.

Benefits & funding

  • Twin-room accommodation, meals and uniform are provided on site.
  • Participants receive £35 per week for unreceipted expenses, plus reimbursement of approved direct costs.
  • Training includes induction, first aid, safeguarding, customer service and outdoor-activity qualifications.
  • Each participant has a £750 budget for agreed development courses and qualifications.
  • The schedule averages 35 hours across five days per week, including some evenings and weekends, with up to 18 days off during the placement.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be at least 18 when the placement starts.
  • Applicants must be based in the UK or already have the right to volunteer in the UK.
  • No formal degree or prior work-experience requirement is stated.
  • Interest in an outdoor-industry career is expected. Scout, Guide or other youth-organisation membership is advantageous but not essential.
  • Applicants must be able to commit to the full residential programme.

Application process
