Schuman Traineeships are the European Parliament Secretariat’s paid traineeships for graduates, with a limited number of posts for vocational qualification holders. Trainees join a unit in fields such as EU policy, law, finance, translation, communication, administration or IT.
Placements are in Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg or a Parliament liaison office in an EU Member State. Two five-month rounds run each year: October–February and March–July.
Benefits & funding
- EUR 1,889 monthly grant (from January 2026), adjusted by the weighting for the country of assignment.
- Luxembourg-based trainees: an extra EUR 500 a month in housing aid from 1 September 2026.
- EUR 300 flat travel allowance; EUR 900 for ACP citizens living in their home country when selected.
- Sickness and accident insurance throughout; up to 50% extra for a disability Parliament recognises.
- Non-EU trainees pay their own visa and permit costs.
Eligibility
- Aged 18 or over on the start date; no upper age limit.
- EU nationals; a very limited number of posts can go to other nationals, especially from accession/candidate countries.
- A full degree (EQF level 6), or for limited posts a two-year vocational qualification (EQF 3–5) from an EU Member State, obtained at least three months before the start.
- One EU official language thoroughly plus a second very well (vocational posts: well); non-EU citizens need very good (vocational: good) English, French or German.
- An eligible criminal record; at most two months’ past work or traineeship in EU institutions, bodies or agencies; no Parliament Secretariat study visit in the six months before starting.
