The Minerva Scholarship Fund (MSF), set up in 2009 by the Leiden student association L.S.V. Minerva, gives grants to Leiden University students for projects outside the Netherlands.
A semester of study, a research stay or an internship abroad can qualify, in any of the university’s seven faculties. A board of Leiden professors picks the recipients.
Benefits & funding
- On average €500–1,500 per grant; the amount depends on how many applications come in, their quality and the sum you request.
- Pays the recipient’s essential costs, such as travel, accommodation, textbooks or a visa — not the research itself.
- Paid into your account no later than six weeks after the deadline.
- Duty: a report with photos or other visuals within three months of the project’s end, and taking part in promotional activities.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled Leiden University bachelor’s or master’s students; international students already studying at Leiden qualify, those still abroad hoping to come do not.
- In a gap year or after graduating, you must stay enrolled at Leiden.
- Minerva membership is not required.
- An exceptional or prestigious study, research or internship project abroad; nothing in the Netherlands.
- The project must not have started yet; a full master’s programme or PhD track does not count.
