Application Deadline

Rolling admission

The New York Times Fellowship is a yearlong, full-time job in the Times newsroom for early-career journalists. Since 2019 it has taken the place of the newsroom’s summer internships.

Fellows do the same work as staff journalists (reporting, photo, graphics, design, video, audio, audience or opinion), mostly from New York, with some places in Washington, San Francisco and London.

Benefits & funding

  • One year of full-time, paid work with benefits, as a Guild-represented employee (pay not published).
  • Talks from senior journalists, training, and regular feedback from editors and mentors.
  • Relocation and housing are at the fellow’s own cost.
  • Being hired onto staff straight after the fellowship happens only occasionally.

Eligibility

  • Early-career journalists with some experience, including recent college graduates; anyone with more than five years of paid professional journalism experience is pointed to other Times jobs.
  • Must already be authorized to work in the US (in the UK for London roles); no visa sponsorship, though a student visa that can be extended with Optional Practical Training is considered.
