The Alexia, a visual-journalism program at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, runs a yearly grant competition for student and professional photographers and filmmakers. The Conservation Grant is one of its pop-up awards, sponsored by The fStop Foundation.

Students propose a photo or film project on the positive side of conservation work amid human-wildlife conflict: how people can live alongside wildlife. They shoot it where they choose. The 2026 cycle has closed.

Benefits & funding

  • US$1,000 (2026 student amount)
  • Guidance from The fStop Foundation during production and publication
  • Every applicant is also considered for the student Vision Grant
  • Duties: make meaningful progress within one year of signing the grant agreement; credit The Alexia if the work is published within three years; you keep copyright but grant The Alexia a non-exclusive licence to use it

Eligibility

  • Students fully engaged in study at a college, university, community college or centre of photography when they submit (for most, full-time enrolment), or who graduated the year before the cycle (2025 for 2026)
  • PhD students qualify while actively pursuing the degree
  • The pages state no nationality or residence limit
  • Past Alexia grant recipients must sit out the next three cycles
  • One proposal per applicant per year
