The King Carl Gustaf Scholarship is administered by Uppsala University for students affected by conflict, natural disaster, or political unrest. The last fully documented cycle supported applicants to international Master’s programmes in Sweden and closed on 2 February 2026.
Uppsala University has announced a redesigned version from autumn 2027 for qualified, fee-paying students already studying at the university. Detailed 2027 application rules have not yet been published.
Benefits & funding
- For the 2026 cycle, the scholarship covered the full tuition fee for an international Master’s programme but did not cover living expenses.
- From autumn 2027, each scholarship is announced as SEK 40,000 per student per academic year toward part of the tuition fee.
- Uppsala University plans to support up to 50 fee-paying students over five years from autumn 2027 through funding from the Gustavian Foundation.
Eligibility
- For the 2026 cycle, applicants had to be citizens of Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Cuba, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Lebanon, Malawi, Mexico, Namibia, Palestine, Philippines, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
- Applicants had to show academic talent and explain particular vulnerability and need for Uppsala University’s educational environment.
- The eligible international Master’s programme had to be ranked first at University Admissions, with the programme application, fee, and supporting documents submitted on time.
- Seven named programmes were excluded, including the listed joint Nordic, biology, sustainability, religion, game design, and Turkic studies programmes.
- The announced 2027 version will instead target qualified fee-paying students already studying at Uppsala University, with preference for students from countries affected by political unrest or natural disasters; full rules remain pending.
