The Berrow Foundation awards up to ten scholarships each year for graduate study at the University of Oxford as a member of Lincoln College. Up to six general Berrow Foundation Scholarships support any field for candidates linked to six named Swiss institutions, while up to four Lord Florey Scholarships support medical, chemical, or biochemical sciences for graduates of any Swiss university.

Scholars normally spend the award period in Britain and are expected to contribute actively to College life. Selection considers academic achievement alongside truth, courage, devotion to duty, unselfishness, and fellowship.

Benefits & funding

  • The scholarship pays Oxford’s combined course fee, including University and College fees.
  • The living allowance matches the Rhodes stipend, stated as £20,400 per year for 2025/26.
  • Funding lasts up to three academic years, subject to satisfactory progress; Lord Florey DPhil scholars who need a fourth year may apply for extra fee and living-cost support.
  • Lord Florey scholars may receive £1,500 for conference travel when presenting a paper or poster.
  • Bench fees, apparatus, and similar research costs are not covered.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Swiss nationals and domiciled in Switzerland by the scholarship deadline.
  • General Berrow applicants must be current members of, or within five years of first-degree graduation from, the universities of Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, or Neuchâtel, or EPFL; they may propose graduate study in any field.
  • Lord Florey applicants may come from any Swiss university but must propose graduate study in medical, chemical, or biochemical sciences; the five-year window runs from first-degree graduation, except that for medicine it runs from the Federal Diploma.
  • Applicants must not already be studying for an award at Oxford and must have a high standard of written and spoken English.
  • The award must be held at Lincoln College; Lord Florey funding excludes research involving human embryos, their creation or cloning, or embryonic stem cells.
